Contractor Marketing
Questions, Answered.
Forty straight answers about how SEO, Google Ads, AI SEO, and websites actually work for home service contractors — including pricing, timelines, contracts, and how Outdooit compares to agencies like Hook and Scorpion.
General Questions
What does a contractor marketing agency actually do?
A contractor marketing agency builds and runs the systems that generate leads for home service businesses. At Outdooit, that means SEO to rank you on Google, Google Ads and Local Service Ads to capture homeowners with immediate intent, AI SEO to get you mentioned in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, and websites built specifically to convert contractor traffic into phone calls. We handle the marketing so you can run the jobs.
Do you only work with home service contractors?
Yes — exclusively. Outdooit only serves home service contractors: HVAC, plumbing, roofing, electrical, landscaping, pest control, solar, painting, flooring, fencing, tree service, water damage restoration, garage door, remodeling, and home improvement. This focus means we understand contractor seasonality, customer behavior, and what actually converts in your trade. We do not work with restaurants, e-commerce, or general small businesses.
Do you serve contractors outside California?
Yes. Outdooit is based in Ladera Ranch, California (Orange County), but we serve contractors nationwide. The same SEO and ads strategies that work in Orange County work in Dallas, Denver, Miami, or any US city. Local SEO is geographically targeted by definition, so geography is never a barrier.
How is Outdooit different from Hook Agency or Scorpion?
Three differences. First, price: Outdooit starts at $2,600/month versus Hook’s $3,500/mo minimum and Scorpion’s $5,000+/mo. Second, contracts: we are month-to-month after the first 6 months while most large agencies require 12-month commitments. Third, ownership: you own your website, domain, and Google accounts. Scorpion uses a proprietary platform you cannot take with you. We build on WordPress so everything is yours forever.
How is Outdooit different from a freelancer or solo SEO?
Coverage and continuity. A solo freelancer is one person doing one thing. Outdooit’s program covers SEO, Google Ads, AI SEO, GBP, content, and link building as one integrated system. If your freelancer gets sick or busy with other clients, your program stalls. We have a team and process so the work continues regardless of any one person’s schedule. We are also still small enough that you talk directly to senior people, not entry-level account managers.
Pricing & Contracts
How much does contractor marketing cost?
Outdooit’s SEO and marketing programs start at $2,600/month, with Google Ads and website projects priced separately. Most contractors invest $2,600 to $5,000/month depending on how competitive their market is and how many services they run. Pricing also depends on your business stage — established contractors and earlier-stage businesses are quoted differently, so the best way to get an accurate number is a free strategy call. Hook Agency requires a $3,500/mo minimum and Scorpion typically requires $5,000+/mo, so we remain meaningfully more affordable than comparable agencies. See our full pricing page for plan details.
Are there long-term contracts?
No long-term contracts. Outdooit operates month-to-month after an initial 6-month onboarding term. We earn your business every month through results, not by locking you into 12-month agreements you cannot exit. If we are not delivering, you should be free to leave.
What does “no contracts” actually mean?
After the initial 6-month foundation period (during which SEO needs time to build), Outdooit operates fully month-to-month. You can cancel with 30 days notice. There are no early-termination fees, no clawbacks, no fine print. The 6-month foundation period exists because SEO results compound over time, and leaving at month 3 means you paid for setup work without seeing the results phase.
Is ad spend included in your management fee?
No. Ad spend is paid directly to Google and is separate from our management fee. Our monthly fee covers strategy, campaign management, ad copywriting, landing page optimization, conversion tracking, and reporting. We recommend a minimum of $500/month in ad spend to gather meaningful data, with most contractors running $1,500 to $5,000/month in spend depending on market size.
What kind of contractor revenue size do you work with?
Contractors from $250K to $20M annual revenue. We deliberately do not have a revenue minimum because growth-mode contractors at $400K need marketing as much as established ones at $5M. Larger agencies often impose $2M or $5M revenue minimums; Outdooit was built specifically to serve the contractor below that threshold who wants serious marketing without enterprise pricing or commitment.
What if I’m not happy with the results?
After the initial 6-month foundation period, you can cancel anytime with 30 days notice. SEO and AI SEO take time to compound, which is why the foundation period exists. If you are unhappy during the first 6 months, we will work with you to identify what is not working and adjust. We have never had a client cancel early because we are transparent about what to expect from day one.
SEO for Contractors
How long does it take to rank on Google?
Most home service contractors see measurable ranking improvements in 60 to 90 days, with strong first-page results in 4 to 6 months. Lower-competition local terms move faster than competitive ones. SEO compounds, so month 12 looks dramatically better than month 3. Google Ads and Local Service Ads start generating calls within the first week of launch if you need immediate leads.
How does SEO for contractors work?
Contractor SEO has four moving parts: technical SEO ensures Google can crawl and index your site, on-page SEO targets the specific keywords homeowners search, local SEO and Google Business Profile optimization gets you in the local map pack, and link building builds the domain authority that pushes you above competitors. Outdooit handles all four as one integrated program because they only work together.
What is local SEO and how is it different from regular SEO?
Local SEO targets searchers in a specific geography — “HVAC repair near me” or “plumber in Irvine” rather than just “HVAC repair.” It involves Google Business Profile optimization, local citation building, city-specific landing pages, and review acquisition. For contractors, local SEO matters far more than national SEO because your customers live within 30 miles of your service area. Outdooit specializes in local SEO for home service contractors.
What is Google Business Profile and how important is it?
Google Business Profile, formerly called Google My Business, is your business’s free listing on Google Maps and local search. For contractors, it is the single most important asset for local lead generation. Most homeowners click results from the Google Maps 3-pack before scrolling to traditional results. Outdooit’s GBP management service includes weekly Google Posts, photo uploads, review acquisition, Q&A management, and full optimization.
How does Outdooit’s link building work?
We acquire authority backlinks from contractor industry publications, local news sites, business directories, and contractor association partnerships. We do not buy links, run private blog networks, or use any black-hat technique that risks Google penalties. Quality over quantity is the principle: 10 high-authority contextual backlinks outperform 100 directory submissions. Link building accelerates SEO results when paired with on-page work.
How many leads should I expect from contractor SEO?
Lead volume depends on your market size, trade, and competitive landscape, but most of our SEO clients see 30 to 40% lead growth within 6 months. A small-market plumbing contractor might go from 8 monthly leads to 12; a large-market HVAC company might go from 40 to 60. We project realistic ranges before you commit and report actual results monthly so you always know what you are paying for.
Do you guarantee #1 rankings on Google?
No, and any agency that does is lying. Google has explicitly stated that no SEO can guarantee specific rankings because the algorithm is not under any agency’s control. What we do guarantee: a measurable, transparent process that has consistently moved contractors to first-page rankings on commercial-intent local keywords within 4 to 6 months. Be skeptical of any agency promising guaranteed top rankings.
Google Ads & Paid Lead Gen
What’s the difference between SEO and Google Ads?
Google Ads pays for placement at the top of search results immediately. The moment you stop paying, the leads stop. SEO earns placement based on relevance and authority and continues working without ongoing ad spend. Ads are fast and tactical; SEO is slow and strategic. Most successful contractors run both, with ads driving immediate revenue while SEO builds long-term lead flow that does not depend on ad budget.
Should I do SEO or Google Ads first?
Most contractors should run both, but if budget forces a choice, start with Google Ads. Ads generate calls within the first week so cash flow improves while SEO builds. SEO takes 3 to 6 months to deliver real volume but eventually costs less per lead and builds a permanent asset. Many of our clients start ads-heavy and shift toward SEO as organic traffic grows.
What are Local Service Ads and should I run them?
Local Service Ads (LSA) are Google’s pay-per-lead ads that show above regular search results for service queries. You only pay when a homeowner actually calls or messages you, not per click. LSAs include the Google Guaranteed badge which builds trust. For most contractors, LSAs deliver the lowest cost per acquired customer of any paid channel, making them essential for any local marketing program.
Who handles my Google Ads account?
You do, ultimately. Outdooit manages your Google Ads account under our agency MCC structure, but the account is registered in your name with you as the owner. If you ever leave, the account stays with you, including all historical data, conversion tracking, and audience lists. This is opposite to agencies that build campaigns in their own account, leaving you with nothing if you leave.
Do you do social media marketing?
Not as a primary service. Outdooit focuses on intent-based channels (search, maps, AI) because that is where homeowners with immediate buying intent search. We do offer Facebook and Instagram ads as a paid add-on for contractors who want to drive brand awareness or seasonal promotions. For most contractors, organic social media is a poor use of marketing budget compared to SEO and Google Ads.
AI SEO & Answer Engines
What is AI SEO and do contractors actually need it?
AI SEO, also called Answer Engine Optimization, is the practice of getting your business recommended by AI tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and voice assistants. When a homeowner asks an AI assistant “who is the best HVAC company near me,” the AI either names you or it does not. Most contractors have zero AI visibility today, which makes this the highest-leverage new lead channel available, comparable to where Google Maps was in 2012.
Is AI SEO replacing traditional SEO?
No, it is layered on top. Google search and Google Maps still drive the majority of contractor leads in 2026. AI SEO is the fastest-growing new channel but not yet the largest. The contractors who win in the next 3 years will dominate both: traditional SEO for the bulk of leads, AI SEO to capture the share of homeowners increasingly using ChatGPT and AI Overviews to find local services.
How does AI SEO actually get me into ChatGPT results?
AI tools source answers from authoritative content on the web. The work involves: structuring your site content so AI crawlers can extract key facts (your services, service area, hours, specialties), building structured data with proper schema markup, earning citations on the websites AI systems reference (Wikipedia, industry publications, local news), and creating answer-shaped content (FAQ pages, how-to guides) that matches how people query AI assistants.
How fast can I expect to see AI SEO results?
Faster than traditional SEO. AI tools update more frequently than Google’s organic index, so well-implemented AI SEO can produce visibility shifts within 4 to 8 weeks rather than the 4 to 6 months traditional SEO requires. We measure AI visibility by querying ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity for your service category and location, then tracking how your appearance changes month over month.
What if I already have an SEO agency or do it in-house?
We can audit your current program and identify gaps without you switching. Our free AI SEO audit, in particular, shows you exactly where your current provider is missing AI visibility opportunities, which you can take to your existing team or have us handle as a standalone add-on. No pressure to switch everything if your current SEO is performing well; we deliver value at any level of engagement.
Websites & WordPress
Do I need a new website to work with you?
Not always. If you have a working WordPress site, we optimize what you have. If your site is on Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy, or any non-WordPress platform, we will migrate you to WordPress as part of onboarding. Our SEO and ads work requires a WordPress foundation because of the technical flexibility it provides for landing pages, schema markup, and Core Web Vitals optimization.
Why WordPress and not another platform?
WordPress gives contractors three things proprietary platforms cannot. First, you own everything — the site moves with you if you ever leave. Second, technical flexibility for advanced SEO including schema markup, conversion tracking, and landing page builders. Third, performance — properly built WordPress sites consistently score 90+ on Google PageSpeed which directly impacts rankings.
What is included in Outdooit’s website design service?
Custom WordPress design built specifically for contractors, mobile-first responsive layout, Core Web Vitals optimization scoring 90+ on PageSpeed, lead capture forms with conversion tracking, click-to-call buttons, integrated GoHighLevel webhooks, on-page SEO baked in from launch, schema markup configuration, and Google Analytics 4 plus Google Tag Manager setup. Every site is optimized to rank and convert from day one.
Process, Team & Reporting
What is the onboarding process like?
Onboarding takes 30 to 45 days. Week 1: kickoff call, technical audit, GBP audit, competitor analysis. Weeks 2-3: keyword strategy, content plan, website improvements or rebuild. Week 4: campaign launches for Google Ads, GBP optimization, initial SEO work goes live. From day 30, the program is in full execution mode. You get weekly updates during onboarding and monthly reports after.
Who will I work with at Outdooit?
Outdooit is intentionally a small team, so you work directly with the people doing the work. No account managers passing your questions to executors three layers deep. Most clients work directly with Dennis and Kristine, the co-owners, plus our specialist team for SEO content, link building, and ads management. You get senior-level attention without enterprise-agency markup.
What reporting do I receive each month?
A monthly report covering keyword rankings (current vs. previous month), organic traffic from Google Search Console, leads generated by source (organic, ads, GBP, direct), Google Ads performance breakdown including cost per conversion, work completed in the last 30 days, and the strategy plan for the next 30 days. We also share access to a live dashboard you can check anytime — no waiting for the monthly report.
How do you measure SEO success?
Three metrics, in priority order: (1) qualified leads generated from organic traffic, (2) keyword rankings on commercial-intent terms (the keywords that actually drive business), (3) organic traffic volume. We deliberately avoid vanity metrics like “total keywords ranking” or “impressions.” Rankings only matter when they translate into customers calling you.
Will my competitors find out you’re working with me?
Outdooit operates with category exclusivity in your service area. Once we work with an HVAC company in Irvine, we will not take on a second HVAC company in Irvine. This protects your investment and ensures we are working in your favor, not splitting effort between competitors. We tell you upfront if we already serve a competitor in your area before any engagement begins.
Do you do email marketing or text message campaigns?
Light-touch only, focused on review request automation and lead follow-up via the GoHighLevel platform we integrate at onboarding. Full email/SMS marketing campaigns are not part of our core offering because for most contractors, intent-based search marketing produces 5 to 10x the ROI of nurture marketing. If your business model genuinely depends on repeat customer marketing (some pest control or HVAC maintenance contracts), we can recommend specialist partners.
Getting Started
How do I know if I’m ready for marketing investment?
Three things matter more than revenue size. First, do you have capacity to handle 20 to 40% more leads (truck, technician, crew availability)? Second, do you have a system to actually answer the phone, ideally with an answering service if you cannot? Third, is your average job size enough to justify $1,500 to $3,500/mo in marketing spend (typically yes if you average $400+ per job)? If those three are true, marketing investment will produce measurable returns.
Can I see examples of contractors you’ve worked with?
Yes. Visit our case studies page to see detailed breakdowns of what we built and the results contractors achieved. We can also share specific results during a strategy call, including the trades we have served, the improvements we drove, and the timelines involved. We respect client confidentiality and do not name competing contractors when speaking with potential new clients in the same market.
What is included in the free strategy call?
A 30-minute call covering: review of your current website and Google Business Profile, audit of your top 3 competitors’ SEO and ads, identification of the top 5 keyword opportunities in your market, recommended marketing mix for your trade and goals, and a transparent budget recommendation. No pitch, no pressure, no obligation. Most calls end with a clear action plan you can execute yourself or have us run.
